Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems – OHSAS 18001

Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems - OHSAS 18001

THE CERTIFICATION

Organisations with a certified Occupational Health and Safety Management System demonstrate their commitment to offer a safer workplace and to prevent any possible risk, protecting their staff and caring for employees’ safety and health.

BS OHSAS 18001 “Occupational Health and Safety Management System – OHSMS” is an English standard in force in Italy since 1999. Its main purpose is to apply a proficient risk management, regarding health and safety risks associated with working activities.

Since March 12th 2018, BS OHSAS 18001 has been replaced by UNI ISO 45001:2018 “Occupational health and safety management systems”, the new international standard for occupational health and safety, which has taken over previous national systems after a long development process.

The aim of the Occupational Health and Safety Management System is to provide employees a safe and healthy work environment where risks of accidents and sickness and reduced at minimum.

In recent years, the institutions’ commitment to health and safety in the workplace has been growing, as evidenced by the introduction of UNI ISO 45001, which is based on the High-Level Structure and is designed to be easily integrated with other management systems, such as ISO 9001 (Quality), ISO 14001 (Environment) and ISO 37001 (Anti-Bribery).

All the latest international standards are built on a risk-based thinking approach, which takes into account any possible risk and then develops an effective strategy to manage it.

BENEFITS

An Occupational Health And Safety Management System not only enables the Organization to meet legal and regulatory requirements, but it also brings other advantages in terms of staff satisfaction, higher productivity and lower insurance costs.

The main benefits deriving from this Management System are:

  • Reduction of workplace accidents and occupational diseases
  • Increased productivity due to reduced absenteeism
  • Reduction of insurance costs
  • General improvement of the employees spirit
  • Creation of a health and safety culture, whereby employees and leadership are encouraged to take on an active role
  • Enhanced reputation
  • Ability to meet legal and regulatory requirements.

WHY TO GET CERTIFIED?

In addition to the advantages mentioned above a certified Occupational Health and Safety Management System is essential for demonstrating the compliance with statutory requirements, avoiding penalties and improves the corporate image, enhancing the company profile in terms of trading credibility and marketing reputation.

Organisations already certified against BS OHSAS 18001 standard must complete migration to UNI ISO 45001 before March 12th 2021, a term beyond which their existing certificate will expire losing its value, as established by the Accreditation Bodies adhering the International Accreditation Forum (IAF).

WILL MY COMPANY UNDERGO CHANGES?

Organisations approaching the Occupational Health and Safety Management System for the first time are worried about all the changes that the adaptation to the standard may imply.

Actually, implementing a certified Management System means to follow principles and to carry out activities that already exist. Often, the implementation of the Occupational Health and Safety Management System consists in a better arrangement of the organisation’s processes and in a detailed documents review.

Organizations already certified against the BS OHSAS 18001 standard usually have most of the necessary instruments and systems in place for the transition to the ISO 45001 standard.

WHAT DOES THE CERTIFICATION PROCESS IMPLY?

The Certification of Occupational Health and Safety Management System process begins with the system’s implementation, carried out by an internal specialist or an external consultant.

Once the implementation is completed, ASACERT verifies the system consistency with the legislation and issues the Certificate that will be valid for 3 years and verified yearly.

The Audit takes place the first year and it consists in two phases (Stage 1 and Stage 2) and leads to the final Certificate issue.

Within 12 months from the first certification, ASACERT carries out a Surveillance audit in order to verify that the management system is unchanged and still compliant with the standard. If any great change occurs, the Certification Body can modify the Certificate updating it to the organisation’s new situation.

Within one year from the first Surveillance Audit a second Surveillance Audit is due.

At the end of the third year, the organisation has to renew the Certificate through a specific Renewal Audit, otherwise the Certification will be no longer valid.
